General Directorate of Medical Services


It is one of the supporting departments in the ministry which has been introduced due to work requirements and its nature, as it serves segments of society that their care requires specialized and continuous medical and health care. The conditions of the elderly, disabled and residents in social houses and institutions require medical care along with other services, and one of the most important forms of care provided to these categories is the preventive and curative health care.


Therefore, as curative rehabilitation for example is one of the most important services provided to disabled and elderly, the general directorate of medical services was entrusted to basic tasks in this field which have a significant impact on the success of the rehabilitation plans that the ministry seeks to achieve. The general directorate of medical services is responsible for all this within the limits that help achieving the objectives assigned to it.


General Directorate of Medical Services objectives:


1-        Provide comprehensive medical services (rehabilitative, curative, and preventive), with all relevant medical specializations to the categories sponsored by the ministry and its various branches.

2-        Provide rehabilitation, awareness and medical services ... etc. for disabled and elderly in their homes and identify their needs of medical assistive devices... etc to alleviate their suffering through health care and home rehabilitation program.

3-        Contribute with the other competent directorates in the ministry with all possible support for disabled, whether physical or in-kind subsidies ...etc.


4-        Follow-up providing the medical services in shelter branches, and evaluating them to ensure its quality, and striving for the development of these services through the direct supervision of medical staff, training and support by all means and medical devices, within the available resources.


5-        Participate with the other relevant bodies (governmental, civil, and charitable) to create the appropriate environment for disabled to facilitate their movements and fulfill their daily needs.


6-        Contribute to raise the health awareness of the community in general, and in the ministry branches in particular.


7-        Seek to raise community awareness about disability and disabled, and educate people regarding disabled rights and duties.

8-        Seek to raise the level of awareness of the disabled and educate him regarding his rights and duties.


9-        Provision of emergency and primary medical services for ministry's employees during working hours.


10-      Seek for the development of medical and rehabilitation services for disabled in cooperation with other relevant bodies (governmental, charitable, civil and others).


Roles of the General Directorate of Medical Services roles:

1-        Put the necessary curative and preventive plans for residents in the social centers, institutions and social houses especially the disabled and elderly.

2-        Follow-up cases which need special attention of these categories.

3-        Provision of necessary medical and nursing staff for the ministry branches, and supervision and follow-up of them.

4-        Participate in the identification of the levels, degrees, types and descriptions of disabilities, and provide the necessary medical consultations.

5-        Prepare educational and awareness books, publications and leaflets for rehabilitation and other relative issues of the agency, and publish them for the recipients and workers in the residential branches.

6-        Follow-up the updates on the Arab and international levels about the fields of disability and rehabilitation.

7-        Participate in scientific conferences, seminars and private meetings specialized in medical and rehabilitative fields, and take advantage and benefit from them.

8-        Provision of necessary medical service for the employees and beneficiaries of the ministry and its various branches through public and specialized clinics.

9-        Coordinate with health authorities related to disability and rehabilitation to raise the level of performance in this field, and fulfill its needs.


Operating model:

The general directorate of medical services oversees the provision of all the comprehensive medical services (rehabilitative, curative and preventive), and with all relevant medical specializations to the categories sheltered by the ministry in its different branches through:


1-        Health cadre of the ministry (about 700 employees), and health cadre of operating companies (about 1,200 health Practitioners).

2-        Providing rehabilitative medical services to residents in various branches of the ministry in the following disciplines:

•          Medical examination and providing preventive, curative and awareness services by specialized medical staff.

•          Dental care services.

•          Nursing care for residents.

•          Rehabilitation and functional physiotherapy services.

•          Hearing & Speech disorders  services

•          Psychiatric clinic services.

•          Nutrition and diet services.

•          Pharmaceutical services.

•          Manufacturing and formation of medical splints and prosthetics.
